The study, the National Gaming Study, was done with the help of a small team in the US, and it surveyed 15,000 gamers to see how they played their favourite games. It found that 38 per cent of all games players are in the “excellent” category, meaning they did great “excellent” in the great variety of games played. In the case of games, this means that we’re more likely to buy games than we’ve been to play games. The most interesting question, then, is why people play games in the first place. The traditional way of getting people to play games is via the medium of downloadable content. The more a game has to offer, the more we want to play it. There’s a reason for this: The average price of a game is $60, and that’s the most people can afford. Even if we could drop that to $50 or $40, we’d still want to play games. And games are generally $30 or $35. So what gives? The key thing to do is to make it affordable. A game that was $60 would have to cost $30 to $40 to play. So you could get $60 for $60 of gameplay, but that’s not going to be very enticing to people.
